Name: Helen Jones, aka Elluse
Title: Joshua Brooks 2025
Medium: Oil Paint on upcycled frame
Joshua Brooks 2025” is my second commercially focused painting, created with the idea of what people might want on their walls, but it still carries my signature edge. Painted in oil on an upcycled frame, it reflects my inner tension with fitting into a world that often overlooks people like me. I come from poverty, with little formal education, and that sense of invisibility runs through this piece. There’s a quiet defiance in it—a refusal to follow the typical, crowd-pleasing aesthetic of commercial art. You might see me in the painting, and it might come across as jarring or out of place, but that’s the point. This is about expressing what it feels like to be on the outside looking in, spending time alone painting, because society doesn’t make space for those without money or status. It’s subversive, personal, and honest—like all my work.
