My art expresses that feeling of being weighed down by these systemic challenges. For those who have experienced depression and anxiety, the emotions in this piece may feel familiar. Relief from that stress is like coming up for air and feeling free, if only for a fleeting moment, before the responsibilities of the capitalist world pull us back under.
Artistic Philosophy: Stillness in the Busy
Creating art is a philosophical journey for me. In ‘Consumed,’ I explore the idea of simplifying one’s thoughts to achieve a contented life. The simple figure of the young person set against a busy, overwhelming background reflects this Buddhist-inspired ideal of finding a clear mind amidst chaos.
While I do not consider myself a religious person, I am a spiritual one. I value the practice of calming the mind through meditation and living with less. This recurring theme in my work is a direct response to the “noise” of the modern world.
Technical Insight: The Choice of Simplicity
Technically, I chose to keep this artwork two-dimensional. It was a deliberate decision to take a break from more complicated projects and embrace simplicity. This process is about balance—improving my technical skills while keeping the joy of creation alive. Being my own critic allows me to strive for better, using my practice as a way to step out of the daily routine and pursue a true passion.
